According to Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports, Virginia Tech is currently hosting Alabama DL transfer Khurtiss Perry.
Perry spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career at Alabama but failed to play any defensive snaps during those two seasons. Prior to that, Perry was a top 110 recruit nationally by all four major recruiting services. He also has fascinating size at 6’2’’ and 265 pounds that could lead to him being a more athletic DT in a mold similar to Pheldarius Payne who slid in from the edge last year and shined.
Perry has also received plenty of interest as he previously told us with offers from the Hokies, Indiana, Houston, California, Tulane, and Colorado State with more schools interested. He has also taken a visit to Indiana previously.
He would be a low-floor, high-ceiling type player who wouldn’t have to play immediately given what the Hokies have done in the portal at DT earlier this offseason. He also has three years of eligibility remaining so there is time for him to develop into a quality DT who can contribute in 2025. There’s plenty of risk given how Perry was unable to gain any traction at Alabama, but the modern transfer portal era opens the door for a team to take some risks like this.
Defensive line may be a surprise, but this is about building more depth in the trenches especially after the Hokies moved Gunner Givens and Lemar Law from defensive tackle to the offensive line. While I think Tech should likely focus more on adding a safety first with running back being a portal priority regardless, I can see why the Hokies are looking at adding something younger depth to their defensive line room with a player who was previously an elite top 100 recruit.
