Riding a very young horse is not recommended because long hours of carrying a rider can be hard on muscles, bones, and joints that are not yet mature. For a horse that is questionably sound or recovering from an injury, even a brief trail ride might be enough to bring on serious lameness or a setback in recovery.

Almost always, yes. Whether you're hauling to a rodeo, dressage test or a distant trail riding event, you should carefully wrap every leg that's getting on that horse trailer.

Thoroughbred Horses

Thoroughbreds were bred to be racehorses in the beginning. They are big, strong, fast, and have a lot of endurance. These are also hot-blooded horses, which can be high-strung and energetic. It can be overwhelming for beginners.

1) Stop or Slow.

If you are hiking, move to the side of the trail remaining within sight of the horse. If you are biking, slow down and then move to the side. If a horse is acting up, you may need to stop and get off your bike. This helps the horse recognize that you are a human.

Mental Stimulation: For ring-sour horses and horses who become bored in their daily routine, getting onto the trails can work wonders. The change in scenery gives your horse (and you!) a new experience and may make your ride more enjoyable. Many seasoned show horses find trail riding to be a wonderful new adventure.

Do horses need boots for trail riding? ›

While unshod horses often do well being ridden or turned out on soft terrain, some require the help of hoof boots to stay comfortable and sound on trails or during long rides.

The trail horses are turned out in large fields and paddocks where they cannot manage their own hoof growth by walking over rocks, so this is where the farrier comes in to trim the hooves. If they wouldn't have shoes on, the horses would get hurt or uncomfortable on the trails.

Sloet van Oldruitenborgh-Oosterbaan et al. (2006) performed a study “to test the effect of riding horses low-deep-and-round (LDR) on workload and stress”. The horses in this study were not used to being ridden in this manner.

Functional Anatomy. The equine stifle consists of two articulations: the femoropatellar joint (FP) and the femorotibial joint. The femorotibial articulation is divided into a medial femorotibial compartment (MFT) and a lateral femorotibial compartment (LFT) (Figures 101-1 and 101-2).
