How to Defeat a Troll in Hogwarts Legacy
Trolls can be defeated by using spells, basic magic attacks, ancient magic, and consumables like Chomping Cabbage. The best way to defeat a troll in Hogwarts Legacy is to keep your distance, defending against boulders with Protego spells. You can use a combination of control spells to slow the troll down do damage and eventually kill it. In this guide, we will show you how to defeat a troll, and what type of loot you can expect.
Trolls Mechanics and Attacks
Depending on the troll you encounter, you have to either Protego, Dodge, or all three. The visual indicator for Protego is yellow, while Red shows when you need to dodge. Also, some trolls have a three-pronged attack, where they will do two red dodgeable attacks, finished off by an over-the-top attack that can be deflected with Protego.
In general, keep your distance. The troll will typically pick up a rock and throw it at you. This is easy to counter with Protego, and if you have ancient magic throw talent, you can fling the rock back at the troll. If the rock hits, it will stun the troll briefly allowing 1-2 spells to be cast. You can use dodge to create space. The Swift talent in the Core enhances the dodge ability. Once selected, you can create massive space between you in the troll by holding down dodge. This is useful because the troll telegraphs the rock and is much easier to see at a distance.
Lastly, combine ancient magic with throwable consumable items like Chinese Chomping Cabbage. Ancient Magic spell will significantly lower the health of the troll and oftentimes stagger it. Items like Chomping Cabbage or Mandrake Root also do damage, and stun or slow down the troll. These help you do free damage and create space to detect incoming troll attacks.
Types of Trolls
Throughout Hogwarts Legacy, you will find a variety of trolls with different strengths and weaknesses. Below is a list of various trolls in Hogwarts Legacy:
There are two infamous trolls, The Riparian Troll and Alexandra’s Troll. Infamous enemies and foes are more powerful than normal enemies of these types. They are typically related to quest lines or other parts of the story and can be the most challenging of the enemy type. Killing and beating one of these trolls will progress the Defeat Infamous Foes challenge.
Achievements for Killing Troll
You can earn a gear trait recipe by killing 15 trolls. Upon beating 15 trolls, The Cushioning III significantly decreased the damage taken from trolls. While not one of the best traits in Hogwarts, it’s something to add to your collection.
The Hogwarts Legacy achievement for trolls is Troll with the Punches. This gives you a bronze trophy or 15 gamerscore for surviving the troll attack on Hogsmeade. You can expect this to happen early in the game and an introduction to these deadly creatures.
The last important aspect of defeating trolls in Hogwarts Legacy is collecting their resources. Dead trolls leave Troll Bogeys, a key ingredient in invisibility potions. Therefore, make sure you always stop and beat trolls when you see them to collect this valuable resource.

After the troll slams its club on the ground with both hands, flipping it upwards with Flipendo will have greater leverage than usual, sending the club into the troll's face for a powerful blow. Hitting a troll with its own boulder will catch it off guard and make it more vulnerable to follow-up attacks.
Basically, while fighting the troll, players must avoid its attacks and wait until it performs a specific move. The troll will slam its club on the ground, and it will momentarily stay in that position. Once the troll misses the slam attack, players will need to cast Flipendo quickly --that's all there is to it.
When taking on the Infamous Foe, Alexandra's Troll, you should prioritize equipping spells that match your unique playstyle, but we recommend that you use ranged attacks capable of stunning the troll mid-attack such as Confringo, Ancient Magic Throw, and Bombarda.
Trolls are weak to piercing damage and so your best weapon to use against them while you are in bronze is going to be bow and arrows. Kiting trolls with a bow is simple and effective. You take zero damage and your only concern is conserving stamina.
Trolls were strong and vicious, but generally dim-witted. Some were described as being able to speak, while others appear to be as irrational as animals. The major weakness of at least some trolls was that they turned to stone in sunlight. Their hide was as thick as stone and nigh-impervious to physical attacks.
- Ignore them: The best way to deal with trolls is to ignore them. Trolls want attention and validation from others. If you don't give them what they want, they will lose interest and move on. Don't feed the trolls by responding or engaging with them.
To flip the Troll's club into its face, cast Flipendo on the Troll after dodging its attack. After casting Flipendo, the club will flip back and knock the Troll out, leaving time for you to get in some good hits. In the long run, this can save you loads of trouble when taking down these giant opponents.
With all this in mind, the best strategy for defeating Alexandra's Troll is to start the fight by hitting it with Ancient Magic and then flinging all of the nearby rocks and barrels at it using the R1/RB button.
There's an easy Troll lair in the north of the Forbidden Forest and another north of Feldcroft. You also fight one at the end of the mission 'The Helm of Urktott' which should be around the same time as the assignment that needs bogeys. You can also buy troll bogeys from J Pippin's Potions in Hogsmeade.

Trolls are large creatures, and the Protego spell doesn't work on most attacks. It is best to avoid them by dodge-rolling out of the way. Trolls will, at times, try to throw a boulder at the witch or wizard fighting them.
The final boss of Hogwarts Legacy is, unsurprisingly, the most challenging and powerful boss in the entire game. It is incredibly difficult to block most of the dragon's attacks, so players should focus primarily on dodging instead in this fight.

If you can manage to sneak up on a troll without it or its allies spotting you then you'll be able to cast Petrificus Totalus on it. Note that this will not petrify the troll as it's too big for that. However, the spell does take out a decent chunk of health on these big guys, making it easier to defeat trolls.
