I’ll start by sharing some easy Easter basket theme ideas and then I’ll share some budget-friendly filler ideas, as well as where to get them. And I’ll finish with giving you steps on how to put together Easter baskets for your kids.

Do You Need A Theme For Your Easter Baskets?

When you are trying to put together Easter baskets for your kids, the first thing you need to do is decide if you want your basket to have a theme or not. You don’t have to pick a theme for your Easter baskets, but sometimes it’s fun to do! By no means is it required, but it can be fun to do one year.

Picking a theme can even help you easily figure out what you want to put in the basket too! You just choose a lot of theme related items, and it makes the whole process of picking filler items even easier.

Again, it’s up to you if you decide to pick a theme for your basket, but if you do want to pick a theme, here are some possible theme ideas to get your creative juices flowing. But, before I share theme ideas, let me first share how to pick a theme.

How to Pick an Easter Basket Theme

  1. Start with your child.
  2. Choose a theme your child would like.
  3. Make a list of ideas.
  4. Consider your budget.

1. Start With Your Child

Choosing a good theme for your Easter baskets, you need to start with your child in mind first. The best place to find a theme is to think about what your child would like. Consider their likes and dislikes and what they are interested in. Oftentimes, you will find a theme right there.

2. Choose A Theme Your Child Would Like

Pick a theme your child would like. What are they interested in? What cartoons do they watch on TV? Do they have a favorite color? What sports do they like? What types of candy do they prefer? All of these questions are good ones to answer when you are trying to pick a theme for your Easter basket that your child will like.

3. Make A List Of Ideas

Jot down a quick list of ideas, based off the answers to the questions above. I like to jot down at least 4-5 things that my child would like and then I go to the store, or I start looking online for things my child would like. If you have multiple kids, make sure to have a list for each of them.

Always include a fun game! Don’t forget you can snag our FREE Roll An Easter game right now that your kids are sure to love!

How to Put Together Easter Baskets For Kids

Putting together Easter baskets for your kids doesn’t have to hard or intimidating and my hope is that these following steps will help you feel confident that you can put together an adorable Easter basket that your kids will love! There is no right or wrong when putting together an Easter basket – ok?

Just go for it. Plus, if you don’t like how it looks, just start over and rearrange the contents. I can guarantee you that your kids will not be judging your assembly abilities. Plus, if your kids still believe in the Easter bunny, they won’t have any idea you put their Easter basket together anyways!

Before I give you steps to assemble your Easter basket, let me also give you some creative ideas of baskets you can use that aren’t just a traditional basket.

Unique Easter Basket Ideas For Kids

  • Crochet a basket
  • Use the bed of a toy dump truck as the basket
  • Beach towel
  • Rain boots
  • Candy bouquet out of Peep boxes tied together
  • Wooden basket
  • Craft paper basket
  • Purse or a bag as a basket
  • Box
  • Laundry Bbasket
  • Inflatable pool toy as a basket
  • Glass jar
  • Plastic 5 gallon ice cream tub
  • Giant mixing in bowl
  • Baseball cap
  • Toy wagon
  • Toy shopping cart

Now, let’s focus on the steps to take to put together Easter baskets for your kids.

Step #1: Pick A Theme

Choose a theme, or no theme at all.

Step #2: Pick A Basket

After you pick a theme, then choose either a theme-specific container or a basket. This container will be your actual basket to hold all your items. Or you can pick up a traditional wicker Easter basket and filler grass. You can also use the same basket you had last year! I prefer plastic Easter baskets – they seem to hold up better year after year.

We like to keep the same baskets and use them year after year, no matter what our theme. Except for the one year that I decided to give the kids fish bowls as their Easter baskets. It’s a long story, which you can read about here, but basically, my kids all wanted to get their own pet fish.

I wasn’t against the idea, so the Easter bunny brought them all the necessary supplies – delivered in their own fishbowl, as the basket. Each bowl also included a fish certificate that allowed them to purchase a beta fish from our local pet store. It ended up being a very fun Easter that I’m sure my kids will remember for years.

I know what you thinking – how long did the fish last? Not very long, but it was still a very cute and unique Easter basket idea that year!

Step #3: Go Shopping

Head to the store and buy your Easter basket filler items, candy, filler grass, plastic eggs, etc. If you are looking for theme specific filler ideas – read this post – Easter Basket Theme Ideas For Kids.

Remember you don’t have to buy a lot of filler items – just a few 3-5, is perfect. If your basket is on the smaller side, you don’t have to get very many items. If it’s on the bigger side, you may be need to get a few more.

Step #4: Assemble Your Basket

Wait until the kids are busy to assemble your baskets – so they don’t see! Take out all the items you purchased for the basket and place the taller items in the back and the shorter ones up front.

Layer your items in the basket making sure you can see all the items. You can use filler grass to make items taller or to pack an item in place.

Step #5: Hide Your Basket

Make sure you hide the filled basket, out of reach of your pets and animals, and from your kids until Easter day. I like to hide my filled baskets in suitcases in my basem*nt – so far, it’s one of my best hiding places!

Now, let’s discuss some ways you can save money on Easter baskets too!

How to Save Money On Easter Baskets

Now that I’ve told you how to put together Easter baskets for kids, I also want to give you a few ideas of how you can save money on your Easter baskets without sacrificing any of the fun.

  • Don’t go overboard.
  • Use filler grass.
  • Don’t forget the candy.
  • Find free stuff!

1. Don’t Go Overboard

First, don’t go overboard and buy a ton of things. You don’t have to give your kids the moon in every shape and color that exists. Once you pick your theme, or no theme at all, just get a few things that go along with that theme and then fill the rest of the basket with candy.

2. Use Filler Grass

Secondly, use filler grass, because it’s cheap and it takes up space! Plus, it makes your basket look festive and it helps to hold all the basket items in place. Filler grass is very colorful and won’t cost much, and you can save it year after year to use again.

Then, don’t forget the candy! Candy doesn’t have to be expensive and you can share it between all the baskets you need to make. If you want to make your basket even more festive, put candy inside plastic eggs and place those inside your basket along with all your other filler items.

4. Find Free Stuff

Finally, find free stuff that you can give to your kids. I’m not talking about free junk, but I am talking about free Easter themed games that you can play with your kids!
