How to Make Cabbage in an Electric Pressure Cooker

Cris here.

I LOVE this recipe. I have always loved this recipe, but now I am even more in love with it because I can make it super quick in my Instant Pot.When we would grill out as a kid, my mom would always make boiled cabbage to go with it. Sometimes she would even make a grilled version where she would remove the core of the cabbage and insert the butter into the center.

So how easy is it to make cabbage in an Instant Pot? Incredibly easy. You just slice up your cabbage, put it in a 6 quart electric pressure cooker along with your broth, butter, salt and pepper. Put the lid on and set to seal. Cook on high pressure for 5-10 minutes (depending on how tender you want your cabbage) and once it is done cooking, quick release. It is that easy! And oh-so yummy!!

Camping with an Instant Pot:Instant Pot Cabbage

When we started RVing and cooking out of our camper kitchen, nostalgia hit and I wanted to make cabbage to go with our meals. Our little camper microwave takes forever to cook it up though AND the cabbage would take up WAY too much real estate on our tiny camper grill. We could make our Crock Pot Cabbage, but it is just a little different and takes all day. Instant Pot to the rescue. I can whip up an entire cabbage in minutes and it tastes just like mom used to make. We now make it ALL. THE. TIME. Especially since it is a low carb veggie we can serve up for family dinner for those of us eating low carb meals.

  • We have made this cabbage successfully in all of our 6 quart electric pressure cookers: Instant Pot, Crock Pot Express and Farberware.
  • If you are using an 8-quart Instant Pot, you may need to use a half cup more liquid to make sure your Instant Pot will come up to pressure.

  • As with any of our recipes, carb counts, calorie counts and nutritional information varies greatly. As a result, your nutritional content depends on which products you choose to use when cooking this dish.
  • Finally, all electric pressure cookers cook differently, so cooking times are always a basic guideline. Recipes shouldalways be tested first in your own electric pressure cooker and time adjusted as needed.

Enjoyed the video yesterday! I’m going to give this technique a go, with a wee slight adaptation. We are friends with an older couple from Germany and she adds bacon and a bit of white vinegar to her braised cabbage. Hoping to come close to what she serves!

We love hearing from you, it totally makes our day! Please remember, our comment section is much like our dinner table... You don't have to like everything we serve up, but you do have to use your manners.

FAQs

Can the Instant Pot be used as a crockpot? ›

Press the "Slow Cook" button to select the slow cooking function. Set the cooking time and temperature. The Instant Pot has three temperature settings for slow cooking: low, medium, and high. Use the "Adjust" button to choose the temperature and then use the "+" and "-" buttons to adjust the cooking time.

What is the difference between a pressure cooker and a crock pot? ›

Slow cookers and pressure cookers are large countertop appliances that can be used in place of pots, pans, and even ovens. The distinction between them is in their names; slow cookers cook food slowly, while pressure cookers cook food fast using pressure.

Why do you put vinegar in cabbage when boiling it? ›

Green is the heartiest variety; it takes well to all cooking methods. Red can turn a funny blue color when cooked, so it's best used raw. If you do want to cook it, add a touch of acid like lemon juice or vinegar to lessen the effect. Savoy can be used in any recipe that calls for green cabbage.

Can you cook cabbage too long? ›

Boiled cabbage is notoriously smelly and steaming is often thought of as a less aromatic way to cook the vegetable. However, the pungent smell is actually the result of overcooking. Boil it just until tender, and you won't have a stinky kitchen.

How do you slow cook without a slow cooker? ›

Slow Cooking in Oven

To mimic a slow cooker, you can use a dutch oven or covered casserole dish in a very low oven preheated to 200° Fahrenheit (United States) or 95° Celsius. Some new wall ovens and ranges include a preset “slow cook” function, then automatically switch to “keep warm” when the cooking time is over.

What temp is a slow cooker on high? ›

The temperature range of a Crock Pot or slow cooker on low and high settings can vary depending on the make and model. However, in general, the low setting of a Crock Pot typically cooks food at around 190-200°F (87-93°C), while the high setting cooks at around 300-350°F (149-177°C).

Why is an Instant Pot better than a crock-pot? ›

An Instant Pot does have more functionality (like sautéing, pressure cooking, slow cooking, and acts as a rice cooker, steamer, and warmer!) than a slow cooker, but if you don't plan to use all of its extra functions and just prefer the simplicity of a slow-cooker, then you might prefer a Crock-Pot.

What is better an Instant Pot or Crockpot? ›

It comes down to what you're looking for and what you need. If you want to set it and forget it, opt for a Crock-Pot. If you want to buy ingredients on the way home and whip up something, buy an Instant Pot.

What tastes better slow cooker or pressure cooker? ›

There is no difference in taste, provided the food is seasoned equally. The issue here is texture, and the time it takes to cook. A pressure cooker will cook very quickly, and depending on the cut of meat can take up to 1/2 the time or less. The food will come out very tender, also.

What does baking soda do to cabbage? ›

You don't add baking soda. Adding baking soda to your boiling cabbage can help reduce the objectionable smell and maintain the green color long after when it typically turns grayish from cooking for too long. However, this may rid the cabbage of its nutritional value.

What does pouring salt into a cabbage do? ›

To ferment vegetables, such as cabbage, we take advantage of these two qualities – it's our golden ticket to fermentation! First, we add enough salt to make it difficult for competing microorganisms to survive. The salt then draws moisture out of the cabbage's cells through osmosis, forming a salty brine.

How do you get the gas out of cabbage? ›

To reduce the likelihood of experiencing gas after eating cabbage, consider cooking it thoroughly. This can help break down the fibers and make it easier to digest. Additionally, try adding caraway seeds or fennel seeds to your cabbage dishes, as these spices are known to help reduce gas.

How many minutes should cabbage be cooked? ›

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, then add cabbage. (It's OK to crowd the pot because the cabbage will shrink!) Step 2Boil until tender, about 5 minutes for shredded cabbage and 10 minutes for wedges. Drain on a paper-towel lined plate to dry.

Can you eat 3 day old cooked cabbage? ›

Cover and refrigerate cooked cabbage within two hours of cooking and use within 3-5 days. If the cabbage is part of mixed dish like cabbage rolls, store covered in the fridge and use within 3-4 days. Freeze fresh or cooked cabbage in airtight containers or freezer bags for 10-12 months.

Why is my cabbage still tough after cooking? ›

If leaves are not pliable enough after parboiling for 1 minute, return them to simmering water another 1-2 minutes to desired softness. Are you salting the water before parboiling? Salt can help soften cabbage.

Which makes meat more tender slow cooker or pressure cooker? ›

Traditionally cheaper cuts of meat always slow cook better. Slow cooking breaks down the connective collagen in meat, which turns into unctuous gelatine. This creates that soft and tender mouth feel we all crave.

Do pressure cookers make meat tender? ›

Both slow cookers and pressure cookers do a good job of tenderizing tough meat, but each makes meat more edible in a different way. A pressure cooker is an enclosed pot with a lid that locks to form an airtight seal.

Can you put raw meat in a pressure cooker? ›

Diced Meat

Season your meat as you normally would. Heat a little oil using the Sauté function and sear the meat. Add 1 1/2 cups of liquid (water, stock, etc.). Cook for 20 minutes (per pound of meat) at high pressure for large chunks and 15 minutes (per pound of meat) for small chunks.

Why is it better to cook in a pressure cooker? ›

Benefits of a pressure cooker. Pressure cooking reduces the cooking time for most foods. This shorter cooking time can result in fewer nutrients being leeched out of food during the cooking process. Put another way, your food keeps more of the nutrients inside.
