He is a famous country music singer recognized for his album Leave the Light On from 2005. Some of his popular songs are "The Love Song" and "Long, Slow Kisses". Before getting a record deal, he worked as a songwriter. One of the songs he co-wrote, "What a Memory," was sung by Tracy Lawrence. In 2006, he moved to Black River Entertainment after leaving RCA, where he released his third self-titled album, Jeff Bates, and an EP called "One Day Closer" in 2011. Bates was born in Bunker Hill, Mississippi in 1963.
In the late 90s, he got addicted to meth and ended up selling all his stuff. Then he started stealing to support his drug habit. In 2001, he got arrested for having drugs and stealing. After serving time in jail and getting help for his addiction, he got a second chance to kickstart his career with RCA. He has been involved in charity work like Toys for Tots and helping out during Hurricane Katrina, as well as other causes. In May 2007, he tied the knot with Kelly Vaughn, and they have a daughter named Brianna.
Jeff Bates joined RCA Records in late 2002. He put out his first album, Rainbow Man, in May 2003. Then, he released his second RCA album, Leave The Light On, in 2005. The song "One Day Closer" became Bates' first inspirational country single and reached the top spot on the Christian Country Charts.
Bates has released three more regular albums and one Christmas album on his own label, Skydancer Entertainment.
One of those albums is very dear to Bates. It's called "Me and Conway" and it pays tribute to Bates' idol, the late Conway Twitty. The album features six Conway classics along with six new songs carefully selected to honor the legend. Loretta Lynn collaborates with Bates on the classic duet "After The Fire Is Gone".
After "Me and Conway" in 2014, Bates released a Christmas album called "Once Upon A Star". This was followed by "Troublemaker" in 2017, and in 2019, a re-release of Bates' 1994 album named "Country's My Middle Name".
After almost twenty years, Jeff has performed in every state in the US, five countries, and four continents. Jeff Bates still does over 100 shows a year, and his live performances excite audiences around the world.
Not always a positive path
His life and career haven't always been so great. Bates went down a bad path in the late 90s, where drugs and alcohol took over and he ended up in jail. When Bates woke up in jail, he realized that he needed to change. He didn't make deals with God to get out, he simply asked to be a better person, no matter how long it took.
Not everyone is lucky like Bates when they face such a situation, but he is one of the rare few who remained determined to make a change. Just two years after getting out of jail, Bates signed his first record contract with RCA Records and put out his first album, Rainbow Man. He later went on to release three more albums - Leave the Light On (also with RCA), his self-titled album, and One Day Closer, both through Black River Entertainment.
But his biggest achievement in all of this isn't getting his first Top 10 single or having a successful album... it's being a caring dad to his lovely daughter, Brianna.
Being a Dad
"Being a dad is my main job," Bates says with a smile. "There's nothing more fulfilling to me than being that little girl's dad. I try to give her a regular life even though my work isn't normal. A big change with fatherhood is now I make choices based on what's best for her, not just me or my career. God gave us this precious life to care for, and that comes first. The most important thing is ensuring she's taken care of and guiding her to become the person we hope she'll be. She's incredible!"
While working on his music, collaborating with other artists, and being a full-time dad, Bates also tours yearly and gives talks to share his story and help others avoid making the same mistakes he did 20 years ago. "I tell it all through music and storytelling," says Bates, who was named Mainstream Country Artist at the 2011 ICM Faith, Family & Country Awards. "I talk about my struggles with drug addiction, time in jail, finding Jesus, and the positive changes in my life over the past 15 years. I've been clean and sober for 20 years now."
There isn't a day when Bates doesn't appreciate his life. He feels grateful to inspire others and is happy to help through music.
