In India, whenever we have guests visit us at home, it is a tradition to serve something sweet, something savory and something hot to drink. Kesari (an Indian sweet/snack) and onion fritters are the most commonly served snacks along with a cup of hot tea or coffee. It is also a very famous snack sold in all the tiny roadside tea shops. But for me, onion pakoda reminds me of those rainy evenings I spent with my parents and it is one my husband’s favorite snack. Onion fritters/ Onion Pakoda are quick and easy to make. It requires only a very few key ingredients: onions, gram flour, cumin, fennel, chili powder and oil. If you have just begun your cooking journey, you should definitely try this recipe. Here is a quick snack recipe to enjoy on cold and rainy day with your loved ones!
Happy cooking!

Ingredients
- 1 medium Onion Thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp Gram flour (also known as garbanzo bean flour, chickpea flour, or besan)
- 2 tsp rice flour
- 1 tsp ajwain seeds
- 1/4 tsp Cumin
- 1/4 tsp Fennel
- 1½ tsp Chili powder or as required
- 5 Curry leaves (optional)
- 2 small Green chili finely chopped (optional)
- salt as required
- 2-3 tbsp water
- 1 1/2 cups Oil for deep frying (or as required)
Instructions
Peel the onion and slice very thinly. I use the slicer side of my box grater
Transfer the sliced onion to a bowl and sprinkle some salt. Give it a quick stir. Keep it aside.
Now begin heating the oil for deep frying (medium-high heat)
Add gram flour, rice flour, ajwain, cumin, fennel, chili powder, curry leaves, green chili, and water to a bowl. Mix everything thoroughly.
Use a couple clean paper towels to soak up all the water released by the sliced onions
Now add the onions to the gram flour batter and mix everything thoroughly. Give it a taste and add more salt if required
Drop bite sized spoonfuls to the hot oil
Fry until golden brown
Serve immediately with a hot cup of chai (hot milk tea)!
Notes
Sprinkle some salt to the sliced onions. You do this to help the onions quickly release its water content. This is a very important step. Do not skip it, otherwise you will end up with very oily fritters
