I never used to like mojitos but when I ventured out and tried a Strawberry Mojito at a restaurant in New Orleans on a girls weekend my world changed.

The mojito is considered Cuba’s oldest co*cktail made with only 4 simple ingredients traditionally. Mint, Sugar, Rum and Club Soda. Refreshing and simple.

The only thing I was not super excited about when it comes to a typical mojito is all the sugar. About 23 grams or over 200 calories per mojito. Yikes!!

The average cooler contains anywhere from 6 – 9 teaspoons of sugar!!! One cooler that I won’t name has a whopping 14 teaspoons of sugar…. a real rockstar of a cooler (wink wink).

This co*cktail is sweetened with powdered stevia instead because it muddles well with the mint just like granular sugar but if you are not a stevia fan you can replace with your go-to sweetener easily.

You can make this mojito without the strawberries as well if you are a mojito purist but I love a good fruit-based mojito.

This Strawberry Mojito recipe is in my opinion one of the best summer co*cktails on the planet!

fruit mojito variations to try:

  • Pineapple (my second favourite)
  • Watermelon
  • Raspberry
  • Peach
  • Blackberry

What glass is best for mojitos?

A Collins or highball glass is traditionally used to serve mojitos or any tall glass will do. The taller glass allows more room for mix and ice which are essential to the mojito.

How to make a strawberry mojito

  • In a tall glass add in 2 strawberries, 1 wedge of lime, 2-3 large mint leaves (4-5 small) and 1 tsp of stevia.
  • Use a muddler or the end of a wooden spoon to muddle or bruise and mash the lemon, lime and strawberries together. Not gonna lie. Before I had a muddler I used the end of the potato masher. A girl has to improvise sometimes!
  • Add in ice, 1 1/2 oz of white rum and top with club soda or Orange Perrier. I like the orange perrier because it adds a little hint of citrus. Stir.
  • Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and some strawberries and you got yourself one hell of a drink to enjoy!

TIPS FOR MAKING A PERFECT MOJITO

  • Use white rum.Flavoured rums will throw off the balance between the sweet and sour ratio. I like to use Bacardi White Rum.
  • Minimize the mint.A little mint goes a long way and too much can overpower the rest of the flavours. Stick to 5-8 leaves
  • Do not over-muddle… even if it is fun.Doing so may release too much of the oil from the lime ride and make the mojito bitter.5-7 muddles or twists will do
  • Serve in a Collins Glass if possible –they’re longer and taller to get maximum effervescence out of whatever fizzy ingredients you’re adding like Perrier, Soda Water or San Pellegrino

Can You make this a Non-alcoholic mojito?

Absolutely! Simply leave out the rum! Rum tends to add extra sweetness to the recipe so depending on how you like your drinks you can just add a little stevia or sweetener if you need to.
