Special characters are the punctuation characters on your keyboard, such as: ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) - _ = + \ | [ ] { } ; : / ? . > For example, on many keyboards, to access the Pound sign “#”, press Shift plus the number “3”.

Special characters are often found on the keyboard, usually in the upper right corner near the numbers row. These symbols can range from hyphens and tildes to various mathematical symbols like asterisks and equal signs.

What are special characters? Also known as accent marks or accented characters. A special character refers to any character outside the 26 letters used in US English such as à, é, î, œ, ü, ñ, and sometimes ÿ.

Use the right-hand Alt key in combination with the appropriate letter to get one of the more common combinations (for example, Alt+e will result in: é). Press the symbol you want to use and then the letter you want to use it with (for example, if you first press the ~ symbol and then the “n” key, you'll get: ñ).

Examples of characters include letters, numerical digits, common punctuation marks (such as "." or "-"), and whitespace.

If the input doesn't allow special characters, then the program can send that input to a database system or the operating system without worrying that the input will somehow trigger a feature of that other system and bypass security.

A special key, in the context of computing and technology, refers to a keyboard key that performs a specific function beyond the standard alphanumeric input. How do you insert special characters? ›

Click or tap where you want to insert the special character. Go to Insert > Symbol > More Symbols. Go to Special Characters. Double-click the character that you want to insert.

Inserting ASCII characters

To insert an ASCII character, press and hold down ALT while typing the character code. For example, to insert the degree (º) symbol, press and hold down ALT while typing 0176 on the numeric keypad. You must use the numeric keypad to type the numbers, and not the keyboard.
