A few Netflix movies and shows have a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. Here is what critics loved about them.

These 9 Netflix Original Movies and TV Shows Have a Perfect 100% Rating on Rotten Tomatoes (1)

It’s always fun to be the leader of the pack. In an era where people are spoiled for choice regarding streaming services, Netflix continues to dominate the market, mainly because it got here first, and partly because it has so much content to offer. From licensed movies and shows to original productions, there is always something for everyone. Netflix is also available in more countries around the globe, making it a worthy consolation for viewers tired of seeing the message: “This streaming service is not available in your location.”

However, Netflix’s high supply has created a bigger problem. While finding the most popular shows on the platform is easier, finding the cream of the crop is harder. For every Mea Culpa being recommended to the viewer, there is a better, critically acclaimed, film/show lurking underneath. In fact, subscribers who prefer the best quality will be glad to realize that there are a few Netflix productions with a flawless 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. All they have to do is look at the list below and click on the search bar.

9 Mr. Roosevelt (2017)

Mr. Roosevelt marks the directorial debut of Noël Wells, better known for her roles in Master of None and Star Trek: Lower Decks. Here, she is a struggling comedian trying to make it in Los Angeles. Things worsen when she is informed that the pet cat she left under her ex-boyfriend’s care in Austin is sick. When she gets there, she finds that it has already died. As if that’s not bad enough, she realizes he has moved on with a woman doing much better than her.

Noël Wells Leaves Everyone in Awe

Unlike the character she plays, Wells got it right with her first attempt at glory, proving you can do a lot with a thin cast and limited locations. The film has glowing reviews, with each platform praising a different aspect. For instance, Filmotomy notes how the film is a fun amalgamation of drama and comedy, explaining that it “holds its balance and finds a combination of the two that works on nearly every level.” Various reviewers also wax lyrical about the actress-cum-director. A Chicago Sun-Times piece reads, “Wells is a talent as a storyteller and as a director with a nice visual touch, and as a screen presence.”

8 Giri/Haji (2019)

Co-produced by Netflix and the BBC, Giri/Haji is one of the most suitable suggestions for anyone looking for shows about the Yakuza. Events revolve around Tokyo detective Kenzo Mori, who is mean enough to refer to his ‘black sheep’ brother, Yuto, as a “brainless loser,” but also caring enough to go look for him in London, where he is hiding after allegedly killing a mob boss’ nephew in Japan. Much of the show thus revolves around Mori knocking off the teeth of baddies as he tries to clean after Little Bro’s mess.

A Detailed Crime Thriller

Girl/Haji has been reviewed by close to 100 critics, and none of them found any blemishes. A Ready Steady Cut article declares that “there is nothing else like it on television.” Fans of The Sopranos and Peaky Blinders might disagree, but it's somehow true. No other show combines the underworlds of two countries (England and Japan) as beautifully as this. Additionally, the show excels by covering a lot of ground and never appearing convoluted. A review from The Daily Beast reads, “Everything's intertwined, and the fact that the series never becomes overly messy and manages to keep a rigid focus on its well-drawn characters... is a testament to its craftsmanship.”

7 Creep 2 (2018)

Found footage horror movies don’t come better than Creep 2. The horror flick is about a serial killer (Mark Duplass), who lures his victims by posting job ads for videographers. The film follows the delusional killer as he tries to bond with his target, Sara, hoping that she will develop some form of Stockholm Syndrome. As expected, things don’t go well for him and the film ends with him getting struck by a shovel in the head. But there is a lot of mayhem before that happens. Though this film doesn't have the Netflix Original branding, it was partially produced by Netflix in addition to being distributed by the service.

As Good as the Original… With Some Extra Spice

It’s common for sequels to underwhelm, especially if the original film was too good. Thankfully, Creep 2 offers the same thrills as the first movie, while also curving its path. The Rotten Tomatoes site consensus reads, "Creep 2 has everything that made the original work and more — more laughs, more awkwardness, more unsettling terror." A Reel Rundown review lauds the sequel for being both terrifying and addictive. It reads, “This is the type of film that makes you squirm in your seat due to its uncomfortable nature, but your eyes remain glued to the screen because the thought of missing some crucial detail is just as horrific as a serial killer videotaping all of his kills.” An equally glowing review comes from Decider. The publication concludes this “is the perfect scary movie for people who loathe traditional horror films.”

6 The Baby-Sitters Club (2020 – 2021)

This show is based on the children’s book series of the same name. The Baby-Sitters Club covers the triumphs and challenges of five middle schoolers as they run a babysitting firm in Stoneybrook, Connecticut. Regrettably, it’s now remembered for being one of the critically acclaimed Netflix shows that were still canceled. Despite glowing reviews, the show ended abruptly after Season 2, and online petitions to revive it have all fallen on deaf ears.

Relevant to Modern Times

Adapting old books and tailoring the story to fit modern times is always challenging, yet The Baby-Sitters Club accomplishes that easily. All major and minor publications heap praise on the teen series. For example, Pop Culture Maniacs lauds the show for “capturing the heart of its source material while creating a modern series that old fans and new will fall in love with.” The performances of Sophie Grace, Momona Tamada, Shay Rudolph, Malia Baker, and Alicia Silverstone certainly help in telling a compelling adaptation of the original stories.

5 His House (2020)

Undoubtedly one of the greatest Black horror movies ever made, His House follows a South Sudanese family’s immigration journey. The couple and their daughter flee their war-torn country and head to Britain via the English Channel, only for their daughter to die during the crossing. Once in London, they are offered a shabby home in a neighborhood where they are subjected to racial abuse. Soon after, they realize the house is haunted.

A Strong Directorial Debut

Remi Weekes’ British Academy Film Award for "Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer" was more than deserved. His House adequately addresses socio-political issues while still managing to be frightening. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus notes that the movie is “a terrifying look at the specters of the refugee experience and a stunning feature debut for Remi Weekes.” A few notable reviews in particular come from The Los Angeles Times and Rolling Stone. The former describes it as “one of those return-of-the-repressed freakouts in which suspense and social conscience effectively breathe as one," while the latter glorifies it for its “uncanny merging of political experience and the usual, perilous haunted-house thrills."

4 Mo (2022)

Seinfeld's success in the ‘90s influenced many comedians to create and star in their own shows. Today, the trend remains, and one of the must-see offerings in this category is Mo. The show follows a fictional version of comedian Mo Amer as he deals with the challenges of being a Palestinian refugee residing in Houston, Texas. As he handles the day-to-day activities, Mo also works hard to gain citizenship.

Eye-Opening Insights Into the Harsh Worlds of Immigrants

In a country that has often reported incidents of xenophobia and racism, the immigrant experience isn’t always pleasant, and the series boldly highlights this fact. But as La Nacion points out, it does this “without sacrificing humor and hope.” By structuring itself as a comedy, the show also addresses what could have been deemed too dark for a drama. Deadline Hollywood acknowledges this through a colorful piece that reads, “Mo goes places we almost never see or hear on the small screen — with swagger, sensitivity, and purpose.” Sadly, Season 2 hasn’t premiered yet, despite a renewal announcement being made in early 2024.

3 Heartstopper (2022 – Present)

Based on Alice Oseman's graphic novel and webcomic of the same name, Heartstopper tells the story of a gay teenager, Charlie Spring (Joe Locke), who falls in love with his classmate. Additionally, there are parallel subplots, which revolve around Charlie’s friends of differing backgrounds. The show has been widely praised for its tender portrayal of LGBTQ members, and in its first season, it earned nine nominations at the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards.

Something for All Generations

Many teen dramas struggle to appeal to both younger and older audiences, yet Heartsopper effortlessly does so. The BBC confirms this in its review, noting, “There is a weird melancholy after you finish watching. That melancholy is evident because I think for some people in their 30s, or in their 20s, or who aren't in school anymore, they never had this." San Jose Mercury News, on the other hand, acknowledges the show’s relatability to youngsters. Its review reads, “This is an ideal series for anyone in high school who feels the pangs of being different. It’s realistic but never bitter. You’ll fall for it just like Charlie and Nick fall for each other.”

2 Blue Eye Samurai (2023)

Blue Eye Samurai is set in Japan during the Edo Period (a few decades when the country adopted Isolationist foreign policies by shutting its borders to foreigners). Outsiders, or children born to them, are thought of as impure, so a few Samurai hunt them down. Interestingly, one of them is Mizu (Pen15’s Maya Erskine), whose father was white, meaning she has blue eyes. As she tries to prove she belongs to Japan, she is forced to deal with the prejudice directed at her.

Akita Kurosawa Comparisons… and a General Fun Atmosphere

For any project to be compared to Akira Kurosawa’s works, it has to be superb. Well, some critics feel that what’s on offer here matches the legendary director’s brilliance. Hipertextual declares that the series “strongly resembles some of Akira Kurosawa's classic films. The battles are set against a backdrop of pure anguish, the use of landscape to integrate the action.” The Atlantic also showers adoration, explaining that the “the series takes the trappings of a heroic action-adventure and turns them on their head, crafting a bloody, emotional drama that is riveting from the very first frame.”

20 Best B-Movies on Netflix to Stream Right Now, Ranked

These B-movie hidden gems in the Netflix catalog shuck the big budget, but manage to create engaging stories. Here are the 20 best.

1 Dash & Lily (2020)

Different people have varying opinions about Christmas, but it remains the most anticipated holiday every year. Adapted from Rachel Cohn and David Levithan’s young adult book series, Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares, Dash & Lily covers a teen romance that unfolds over a Christmas week. Dash (Austin Abrams) expresses cynicism, insisting that there is nothing good about the holiday, while Lily (Midori Francis) radiates all the necessary cheer. The two thus try to convince each other to shift sides and join their team. The series was nominated for a whopping 14 Daytime Emmy Awards.

Simplicity in a Crowded Field

Various movies and shows about Christmas come out every year, so it’s often hard to stand out in this field. Surprisingly, Dash & Lily shines effortlessly without having to tweak the formula. The only difference is that the cast and crew members apply themselves. In line with that, Film Companion has a firm and precise take: “If all rom-coms took the genre more seriously as this one, we would not be subjected to the typical fluff that is churned out almost every week." Vox’s review is also one of the many that were summed up to give the film a Tomato score, and it reads, “Dash & Lily just works. Abrams gives good smolder, and Francis is terrific, delivering a breakout performance in a role that could be intensely annoying but that she makes wounded and winning.”
