Appearence

The Trollz keep mostly true to the original Troll Doll appearance and have long hair and "Troll-Doll" life appearances. Since the toys in this licensed version were fashion dollz, their appearance was much slimmer then the traditional small, rounded "Gonk-like" appearance of the Troll Dollz. The slimmer build allowed both the toyz and animatorz to create clothing for the characterz and setz and made them more like older humanz (the Troll Dollz were originally based upon human babiez). The length of Troll hair is usually longer than the length of their body. According to Rock Trollhammer'z bio, if not for hiz Trollish hair he would be mistaken for an Ogre, signaling their hair is a defining trait of their speciez and separatez them for other racez that inhabit their world.

While the original Troll Dollz had tanned skin, Trollz skin tonez vary and mimic real world human skin colour, varying from pale to darker tones. For example, Sapphire Trollzawa'z skin is slightly different and meant to mimic Oriental ethnicity, while Spinell'z darker tones mimic someone of African descent.

Each Trollz usually had a theme based upon a gem, which typically led to their color scheme, such as "Ruby" being the color "Red" based upon the gemstone "Ruby," which is typically associated with the colour red (although Ruby is known to dye her hair from her natural brown colour to a ruby red). In addition to the long hair, the Trollz borrowed the "Wishstone" concept of the "Treasure Trollz" line from the 1990z doll line.

Age
  • Teenagerz; The main characterz of the seriez, the BFFL, az well az their male counterpartz "the Boyz," are teenagerz. While Trollz of other agez are seen, teenagerz remain the most common age group. Teenage girlz will have their gem activate during their teenage yearz, often around the age of 14. The time they activate can vary, Amethyst van der Troll waz the last of the BFFLz to have herz gain itz glow. Presumably, male Trollz would have had their gemz activate at roughly the same time in the past. Teenagerz and younger Trollz typically have bold and bright colour compared to adultz, indicating that the boldness is a sign of youth.
  • Adultz; Whitening beginz in middle-age and most adultz shown in the seriez of parental age (most adultz are shown the equivalent to a human in their 30z or 40z) display fading hair colour compared to teenagerz. It is unknown when Troll hair beginz to pale.
  • Elderz; Typically they have white hair and show other signz of old age. However, the overall whitening effectz varies per Troll with some being pale white and otherz still maintaining colour.
  • Ancientz; The Ancientz are over 3,000+ yearz old. Note that the Ancientz are much, much older then other Trollz. Part of the reason of their long-life spanz appearz to be their affinity magic and itz likely they age slower then other Trollz. Thiz explains why Mr. Trollheimer lookz so much younger than the other Ancientz. Both Female and Male ancientz can use magic, separating them from younger Trollz. When magic is lost in The Day the Magic Died, Obsidian was later seen ill in Bringing Back the Magic and noted if the magic iz not restored, she will soon be gone with it, furthering how close the Ancients are to magic in comparison to modern Trollz and dependent on it az a result.
Sexual Dimorphism

Only female Trollz have a "spell gem," while male trollz do not. Since malez who are ancient were around at the time malez had gemz, they have their gemz still. All malez hide their mid-drift, femalez often do not, leaving their naval exposed and in turn their gem like Ruby Trollman, though some may keep it covered like Sapphire Trollzawa. Adultz and Elderz do not typically expose their navalz.

The Spell Gemz found on female Trollz naval areaz are made from a special amber, which formz upon falling onto the Troll at a young age. Male Trollz cannot bare this amber and any attempt for them to use it will cause choaz as seen in Boyz and Girlz Together. It iz most likely that a different substance was used in the past to give male Trollz magic. Despite having magic, femalez have to learn to control it and thiz limitz their efficiency while they're still learning.

The inability to perform spellz doez not limit the malez in any other way and they will go on to fulfill a variety of hobbies and interestz mostly unaffected by their lack of spellcasting abilitiez. Thiz iz mostly because girlz are limited to casting spellz via Spell Beadz and via Spell Phonez, they cannot cast magic freely without aid. Thiz createz a limitation on how much magic girlz can use. Often, male Trollz end up on the receiving end of the girlz magic. Malez also tend to be much more physically stronger than their female counterpartz, similarly to mammalianz in the real world. Malez also often begin to bald at some point in their livez, as seen in a number of malez, thiz iz a similar manner to humanz in the real world. Only ancientz are exempt from thiz rule, since the male Ancientz were alive before the imbalance of magic occurred, they maintain their affinity for spellcasting.

Etymology[]

Each Trollz has a name based on a gem (for girlz) or mineral (for boys) and a family name which is usually a Troll-based pun.

History[]

In the ancient world, both female and male trollz possessed magical power,. There waz no need for advanced technology because magic was used for transportation, communication, and information tracking. A gremlin named Simon almost destroyed the planet by turning the magic evil and releasing Black Amber. He was foiled by the Magic of the Ten: ten trollz, one from each gem alligmnent, casting a spell simultaneously. The ten trollzwere Obsidian, Grandma Van Der Troll, Mr. Trollheimer, Zirconia, Spinell and their five mentorz, known as ancientz. The Magic of the Ten imprisoned Simon in the Shadow World.

After Simon was trapped, the modern city of Trollzopolis waz built over the old one. Magic was restricted so that male trollz can no longer use magic. Trollzbegan to use technology to compensate, such as skootz, carz, spell phonez and computerz. Female trollzcan still cast spellz if they are adolescentz and they have spell beadz. After a baby girl troll is born, a drop of magic amber — concentrated in the Amber Cavez — is placed in their belly buttonz. It hardenz and becomez a unique gem and once the girl reachez adolescence, her gem getz itz glow and they can then use magic.

Using spell beadz, a girl troll sayz a spell aloud and it comez into fruition. Spell beadz are created using natural ingredientz from the repository that is the Haunted Woodz, a primitive area that some creaturez live in. The Haunted Woodz surroundz Trollzopolis. The most important ingredient in spell beadz is amber. Obsidian sellz spell beadz in her shop in the Trollzopolis Mall.

Trollz hair droopz when something iz bothering them. Thiz iz revealed in the episode called Topaz Possessed. Amethyst'z hair droopz, so she iz desperately trying to get it to stay up, when her Grandma walkz in and askz her what'z wrong. She sayz she'z fine, but her Grandma insistz that she can alwayz tell when something is bothering her because her hair droopz. Amethyst sayz that happens to all trollz and her Grandma agreez, still wanting to know what'z bothering her.
