Make Solid Vegan Garlic Butter (Compound Butter)

There are two ways to make this recipe: a solid garlic spread or a melted butter sauce.

Making a solid vegan garlic spread is simple. For the easiest option, stir all the ingredients together. To do this the butter needs to be close to room temperature, so let the butter sit out for 20-30 minutes before making the recipe. This allows the butter to soften enough for stirring.

Place the garlic butter immediately back into the fridge to keep cool and allow it to solidify back to regular texture. How hard or soft your final product is largely depends on the brand of vegan butter selected.

If you have an electric hand mixer, you can use vegan butter right from the fridge and whip in other ingredients. This creates a fluffier butter option (and depending on how long you whip for, it may become a whipped butter).

This option creates delicious, spreadable vegan garlic butter. The flavor is quite strong, as the garlic is raw, so it’s best to use this in a recipe that involves cooking the garlic butter for a milder flavor.

If serving raw, use 1 clove of garlic or 1 ½ teaspoons of garlic powder to create a less pungent garlic butter.

Make a Melted Garlic Butter Sauce

If you don’t need solid garlic spread, melted garlic butter sauce is another simple option. Just add the ingredients to a microwave-safe dish and microwave in ten second intervals until the butter starts to sizzle. You can also melt in a pot on the stove if you prefer.

With the melted garlic butter option, you cook the garlic slightly as the butter melts, offering a more mild garlic flavor. If using the stove, the garlic butter can be cooked over low heat for a few minutes to cook out the raw garlic flavor (5-8 minutes on low heat should work; stir occasionally).

Ways to Use Vegan Garlic Butter

There are plenty of ways to use delicious vegan garlic butter! Some of my favorites are:

  • To make cheesy vegan garlic bread
  • Sautéed with vegetables (green beans, Brussels sprouts, mushrooms, anything!)
  • As a garlic pasta sauce (toss with cooked pasta and whatever else you like)
  • On roasted potatoes (toss the melted butter with potatoes, a squeeze of lemon juice and roast)
  • Roasted with carrots (delicious and crowd-pleasing side dish!)

The possibilities are endless!

Cuisine American-inspired, Italian-inspired, Vegan

Ingredients

Solid Garlic Butter/ Spread

  • ½ cup vegan butter
  • 2 cloves garlic , minced
  • 1 teaspoon parsley , minced
  • 1 teaspoon green onion , minced (or chives)
  • teaspoon salt

Melted Garlic Butter

  • ½ cup vegan butter
  • 2 cloves garlic , minced
  • 1 teaspoon parsley , minced (optional)
  • teaspoon salt

Instructions

Solid Garlic Butter/ Spread

  • If mixing by hand, let vegan butter sit out for 20-30 minutes to soften and warm closer to room temperature.

    ½ cup vegan butter

  • Mince the garlic, parsley and green onion/ chives. Stir in the garlic, parsley, green onion and salt to the softened vegan butter.

2 cloves garlic, 1 teaspoon parsley, 1 teaspoon green onion, ⅛ teaspoon salt

  • Place butter into fridge to harden/ set.

  • This garlic butter has a strong flavor and is best served after cooking (so the garlic flavor becomes milder). If you want to serve raw, consider using half as much garlic or garlic powder to taste.

  • You can also whip all the ingredients using a hand mixer. If you do this, the butter doesn’t need to be brought to room temperature (you can whip it straight from the fridge).

Melted Garlic Butter

  • Place all ingredients into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 10 second intervals, until the butter starts to sizzle a bit. Takes about 40 seconds overall, depending on the microwave.

½ cup vegan butter, 2 cloves garlic, 1 teaspoon parsley, ⅛ teaspoon salt

  • The garlic cooks while being heated, creating a slightly more mild flavor but it’s still quite pungent.

  • You can also melt the ingredients together in a small pot on the stove, over medium-low heat. Melt until the butter starts to sizzle a bit (or longer if you want the garlic cooked more).
