Overview
Absurd power and blistering acceleration on par with supercars are not the E63's only party tricks; thanks to computer magic and an excellent suspension, it's also incredibly agile. Its 603-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 is a sweetheart engine that sounds badass. An available Drift mode turns the 2019 Mercedes-AMG E63 into a rear-drive beast. Left in all-wheel drive, it proved to be the fastest sedan we've ever tested in our annual Lightning Lap competition. Combine its amazing performance with superb steering and a luxurious interior, and you get one of our favorite sedans. If you need more room for people or stuff, check out the E63 wagon.
What's New for 2019?
For its second year on the market, the 2019 E63 sees few changes. The 12.3-inch digital gauge display is now standard, as is the Burmester Surround Sound premium audio system, which was previously optional.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2019 Mercedes-AMG E63 S 4Matic starts at $107,345.
We're of the mindset that a penny saved is a penny you can spend toward adding another worthy car to your collection. That's why we'd option our E63 S rather conservatively. We'd pay extra for the AMG Performance Exhaust system and for the Exterior Lighting package, which adds LED headlights with automatic high-beams. Finally, we'd check the option box for the Driver Assistance package, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, a head-up display and more driving aids.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Likes: Ferocious acceleration, sonorous exhaust note, shockingly agile handling.
Dislikes: Punishing ride in Sport+ mode, BMW's M5 is quicker to 60 mph.
Like Bruce Banner and the Hulk, the E63's powerful twin-turbo V-8 engine is a mild-mannered partner and a maniacal monster in one. Left in Comfort mode, the engine and transmission react with stoicism and smoothness. Select Sport, Sport+, or Race modes, and the powertrain unleashes relentless fury. Gearchanges are lightning fast, and the engine's 627 lb-ft of torque tears the tires with rampant rage. Steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters offer manual control. Despite being saddled with a pair of turbochargers, the 4.0-liter V-8 sounds almost as wonderful as AMG's naturally aspirated V-8 engines of yore. At our test track, our E63 S test vehicle ripped to 60 mph in just 3.0 seconds; that's break-neck speeds for sure, but the E63's nemesis, the BMW M5, returned an even quicker result of 2.8 seconds.
While not as supple as the standard E300 or E400 sedans, the E63's ride is soft enough in Comfort mode that daily driving the 603-hp sedan is certainly a possibility. Toggle the springs to the Sport or Sport+ setting, however, and the E63 is liable to shake out the fillings in your teeth. Push the E63 to its handling limits, and you'll be greatly rewarded. There's more cornering grip here than any of the E63's impressive competitors can muster—even the M5. Adding to the thrill is the E63's electrically assisted rack-and-pinion steering system, which is both well weighted and highly communicative.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
Given the mind-expanding performance of the E63 S, the mighty Mercedes-AMG is impressively fuel efficient. But that doesn't mean it's an abstemious consumer of fuel. The E63 returned 22 mpg on our real-world highway fuel-economy test route, matching its EPA-rated highway fuel economy. Not bad for a rocket ship. Buyers in search of this kind of explosive acceleration with a lower carbon footprint should look at the all-electric Tesla Model S Performance.
Interior, Infotainment, and Cargo
Likes: Finely crafted cabin, contemporary design, spacious trunk.
Dislikes: Small graphics make switchgear hard to read at a glance, fussy infotainment controls.
As in other E-class models, the E63's interior is made of high-quality materials that are pieced together with the care and craftsmanship of a Hermès handbag. A pair of 12.3-inch screens dominate the upper dashboard—one for the digital gauge cluster, another for the infotainment system. Both provide crisp, clear, beautifully rendered graphics and offer a multitude of customizable functions, including multiple gauge-cluster configurations. A chunky three-spoke steering wheel features a flat bottom and a pair of big paddle shifters.
Largely devoid of buttons, the E63's dashboard is anchored by a row of knurled-aluminum rocker switches for adjusting the standard dual-zone automatic climate-control system. Mercedes' COMAND infotainment system continues to forgo touchscreen functionality. Instead, the system is controlled by the brand's ubiquitous console-mounted control knob. A touchpad atop the control knob allows users to input commands by swiping a finger and offers a degree of touch functionality. Alas, we found the touchpad fussy to use and easy to brush accidentally. The driver can also interact with the two screens by using a pair of touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel.
Although the E63's trunk room is less than that of main rivals such as the Cadillac CTS-V and the Porsche Panamera Turbo, we still managed to fit five of our carry-on suitcases inside. That number matches the Cadillac and is only one less than the Porsche, which is technically a hatchback and sports a visibly larger cargo area.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The E63 hasn't been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The regular Mercedes-Benz E-class has been, however, and it earned top marks from both testing agencies. In fact, it procured a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. Still, we're disappointed Mercedes charges customers extra for driver-assistance features. Key safety features include:

- Available lane-keeping assist
- Available adaptive cruise control
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Although its warranty is class competitive, we continue to be befuddled by Mercedes' decision to forgo complimentary scheduled service—something nearly all of its rivals offer.
