Baked-on Oven Grime: How to Remove it — Optima Cleaners (2024)

Baked-on oven grime can leave your appliance looking and smelling a little gross. It also creates a potential hazard, as the buildup may contain enough grease and oil to start a small grease fire in your oven.

Increase the safety, cleanliness, and service life of your oven with the following baked-on oven grime removal methods.

Remove Baked-on Grease with Vinegar and Baking Soda

Baking soda is effective for oven cleaning and helps eliminate odours. The acidity of vinegar also helps break down baked-on grease and debris.

To remove baked-on grime, mix two parts baking soda to one part water. The mixture should form a spreadable paste that you can spread over the interior of the oven. Attempt to coat every area containing grime and grease. After spreading the baking soda paste, spritz the inside of the oven with white vinegar from a spray bottle. Allow the mixture and vinegar to set overnight.

In the morning, wipe out the interior of the oven using a damp cloth. You may need to rinse the cloth occasionally in a bucket of warm water to remove the grime and residue from the cleaning mixture. If chunks of paste and grime remain, spray the stubborn spots with white vinegar. The vinegar and baking soda will react to each other, helping to break down the debris and make it easier to remove.

Use Hydrogen Peroxide to Tackle Tough Grime and Grease

Adding hydrogen peroxide to a DIY oven cleaning solution can help eliminate tough grime. Try mixing two parts baking soda with one part hydrogen peroxide and one part dish soap. The soap and hydrogen peroxide is more effective at dealing with grease compared to just baking soda and water. If the inside of your oven includes greasy chunks of grime, this method may work better.

Spread the mixture around the inside of the oven and then squirt several tablespoons of lemon juice in the oven. As with the previous step, allow the mixture to sit overnight before wiping it clean. You may need to use a spatula or spoon to remove some of the thicker pieces of grime stuck inside the oven.

Pre-Soak Individual Components of the Oven to Remove Grease

Along with the interior walls, roof, and floor of the oven, you may have stuck-on grease on the oven racks and the oven window glass. Remove the racks before cleaning the inside of the oven. Lay the racks in a large sink or empty bathtub and coat with one of the solutions described above. Allow the solution to sit overnight and wipe clean with a cloth.

To clean the oven window glass, spread one of the homemade pastes over the interior of the glass and allow it to sit for at least 15 minutes. You should not need to wait overnight, as glass is less porous compared to the rest of the interior. As a final tip, always remember to allow your oven to cool completely before cleaning. You do not want to accidentally burn yourself or the homemade paste.

If you dislike the idea of dealing with baked-on grime, you could always contact a professional cleaning company. Professional domestic oven cleaners can save you the hassle of maintaining a cleaner oven.
