GUS FOUNTAIN, Mildred TILLER, Clara BAIR, JAMES SR. "COACH BAIR" To many students, teachers, and parents in the Atlanta Public School and Rutherford County (Tenn.) School Systems, for over 41 years, James S. Bair, Sr. was lovingly known as "Coach Bair." He was committed and dedicated to educating, coaching, and motivating thousands of students during his career. In each phase of his life, he achieved recognition for excellence; as a player, a teacher, a coach, and an athletic director.

Born in Knoxville, TN, he was an All State basketball and football player. He was a World War I veteran, where he served in the United States Navy, Wakiki Beach, Hawaii. After receiving his BA from Morris Brown College, and MA from Tennessee State University, he was a teacher, coach, and athletic director at Holloway High School in Murfreesboro, TN, and held similar positions at West Fulton and Therrell High Schools in Atlanta. As a player, his honors included All S.I.A.C. in football and basketball.

He coached three championship teams at Holloway High School, and was in three championship playoffs at Therrell High School. He is in the Morris Brown College Hall of Fame for both basketball and football; inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame (Boys Girls Clubs of America), Greater Knoxville; Atlanta Touchdown Club; Extra Point Club; and numerous achievement awards from Holloway, West Fulton, and Therell High School Booster Clubs. BALLANCE, MARTHE WALL Mrs. Marthe Wall Ballance, widow of prominent Atlanta executive Harry Greene Ballance Sr.

died April 29, 1997 after complications following a cerebral hemorrhage. Born Marthe Rebecca Wall in Nacogdoches, TX, she moved at an early age to Rome, GA with her family. She came to Atlanta in 1924 and attended classes at Georgia Tech evening school which is now Georgia State University. She played both the violin and accordion in the orchestra of the Central Presbyterian Church and later in the St. Mark's Methodist Church.

Mrs. Ballance became interested in aviation in 1927 when she took her first ride in an open co*ckpit airplane. She persued this interest to become the first licensed woman pilot in Atlanta and the third in the State of Georgia. She and her brother used to "barnstorm" around the State on weekends, taking people for rides in an open co*ckpit biplane. She remained active in aviation-completing, advanced ratings to fly larger aircraft-until the advent of hostilities in World War II.

She was a charter member of the a pioneer women's aviation organization. After working in the motion picture industry for 15 years, she married Harry G. Ballance, the Southeastern Regional Manager for Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. During the halcyon days of movie production, she entertained many Hollywood producers and movie stars in their Buckhead home. Mrs.

Ballance was a resident of the Buckhead area for over 60 years. In addition to the she was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, The Young Matron's Circle for Tallulah Falls School, The Rabun Gap School and the Capital City Club. She was also active in the Atlanta Humane Society and the Variety Club, a charitable organization comprised of people in the entertainment business. She is survived by a son, Harry G. Ballance Atlanta; daughter, Patricia B.
